About Slugs:

In “Slugs”, two characters attempt to make a show about nothing.

They ask, “can’t we just have fun?”

They ask this directly to the audience, as the fourth wall is long gone. Instead, these characters seek to have an hour where we are free of the world outside. Here together, we don’t need to think about it, because this is a special space, where dreams are made, and where our problems don’t matter. But as the show goes along, their space gets invaded by their (our) reality: of being poor, of being marginalized, of being a body with needs connected inextricably to the land and those around them.

“Slugs” is about whether we as theatre makers can ever leave our identities, experiences or intersections at the door - and even if we could, should we? This is about trying to make art in a neoliberal, capitalist world, that is sellable, fundable and programmable, while creating alternative spaces where we might actually, finally, find some relief.

SLUGS  is a play, a clown show, a techno-punk concert, a basement puppet show and a live comedy album all at once. With collaborations by Juno-award nominated musical comedian, Shirley Gnome, Governor General Award-winning playwright, Caleigh Crow, alt-comedy legend Deanna Fleysher (Butt Kapinski), inaugural Julie Taymor World Theater Fellow Zach Dorn.
