Workshop Description:
Spend a full, hands-on day learning the technical foundations of working events at The Artesian. This Artesian-specific workshop is designed for anyone interested in understanding the venue’s tech systems and preparing to shadow—and take on—their own technician shifts.
Workshop Facilitators:
Dana Rempel and Karen Gwillim
Date & Time:
January 17, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
(Includes a lunch break — please bring your own lunch, coffee, and snacks.)
Participants will also have the option to attend a follow-up Q&A session on January 18, 10:00 am - 2:00 PM.
What You’ll Learn:
This workshop covers the basics of all things tech at The Artesian, including:
- How to power on and operate the audio system
- How to turn on and navigate the lighting system
- Where the projector is and how to operate the projector and screen
- How to set up microphones (both wired and wireless), including a podium setup for meetings, events, and speakers
- A simulated band soundcheck using multitrack recordings
- Live observation of the sound check for JP Cormier, with Dana available to answer questions
- Your workshop registration also includes entry to the JP Cormier show that evening.
Who This Is For:
This workshop is open to people aged 17+ and is ideal for beginners, volunteers, emerging technicians, and anyone curious about behind-the-scenes theatre tech. It is also well suited for organizations that rent space at The Artesian and want to learn how to safely and comfortably take care of their own basic technical needs.
Women and gender-diverse folks are particularly encouraged to join, as we are actively working to diversify the field of theatre technicians.
Cost:
This workshop is by donation to support the facilitators and The Artesian.
Suggested donation: $25–$40.
