What Kind of Brown Are You?

For 2018, CURTAIN RAZORS is dedicating their Moveable Feast to the development of Kris Alvarez’s performance series with the working title, “What Kind of Brown Are You?”

Workshops have been Scheduled for May 11, 13, and 14 and tickets to each event are on sale now.  Stay tuned for other pop-up dates and events throughout the year, as Kris experiments publicly with humour and edibles before a live audience.

Her work not only expresses her experience growing up Filipina in 80’s Regina, but she also navigates the experience of being brown in a predominantly white society. It’s a bumpy journey, but it’s done with care and lightness and a ton o’ laughs.

Not content with simply creating a traditional ‘one-person show’, Alvarez’s participatory performances takes the form of communal meals to explore this rich material. “I want these events to be like public/private dinner parties that feel spontaneous and improvised, and allow my special guests to talk about their ‘browness’ with humour and great care,” Alvarez says.

“It is a rare occasion that one gets permission to eavesdrop on a dinner conversation. Kris’s What Kind of Brown Are You? invitation was hilarious, thought-provoking and deeply personal. I have never been so aware of my whiteness while at the same time feeling so connected to folks around the table because we share the same community.” Melissa Coomber-Bendtsen, CEO, YWCA

A little brown on the prairies.
