About Dalawa (Two):

Dalawa (two in Tagalog) is an intergenerational dialogue between artists Susan Alvarez and Girlynne Gascon bridging their differences in medium, style, and subject through a shared intention. Although their individual approaches diverge, their work meets in this moment of conversation, reflecting on humanity, growth, and the experience of being Filipina artists rooted in the Saskatchewan prairies.

This exhibition resists merging two into one. Honouring these two distinct voices speaking reveals resonances between them. Alvarez finds beauty in colour, composition, and design,
channeling aesthetic energy into an eclectic practice that celebrates vibrancy and movement in her paintings. Gascon turns to the quiet intensity of detail, rendering floral drawings on black paper and white ink. Her work draws from emotion, creating images that glow with intimacy through contrast.

Together, their works reflect the layered experiences of artists who carry both heritage and individuality, tradition and experimentation. Dalawa invites viewers to witness a dialogue across generations and practices—an exploration of how art can be both deeply personal and profoundly connective. It is an exhibition about reflection and becoming, about what it means to create and to share, and about finding kinship in difference.
